Cannibalism & The Feral Feminine | Raw With Director Nida Manzoor

Once bitten, twice shy indeed. There are few films as gnarly as Julia Ducournau’s gory coming-of-age film Raw, which follows young Justine uncovering her own cannibalistic urges in her first year of veterinary school. It’s a bloody meditation on sisterhood, a psychologically twisted tale of what it means to let go of everything that defines our idea of a “good girl.” In one particular scene, Justine responds to betrayal at the hands of her older sister Alex and attacks. What follows is a gruesome fight as they bite chunks out of each other under the fearful eyes of their classmates. Here to talk about it is Nida Manzoor, director of action-comedy Polite Society. Following its own pair of sisters-at-odds, Manzoor’s film embraces action tropes just as Raw digs its claws into brutal body horror. The result is two genre films that explore sisterhood and femininity through both poignant vulnerability and explosive rage. In this conversation, Manzoor discusses everything from the physical transformation of aging, the allegorical implications of cannibalism, and the deeply complicated relationships one can have with one’s sister. Polite Society may not be as bloody as Raw, but martial arts functions as its own allegory as Manzoor explores that it means to face down expectations of docility as a young woman. Take a look at this deep dive with Manzoor and be sure to check out her film Polite Society, now in theaters!
